squalène nom masculin Hydrocarbure insaturé, liquide, contenu dans de nombreux tissus animaux (foie de squales) et végétaux, pivot de la biosynthèse des stérols.

squalène [skwalɛn] n. m.
ÉTYM. Mil. XXe (in Larousse, 1949); de squale, parce que cette substance est relativement abondante dans le foie des requins.
Chim., biol. Hydrocarbure à longue chaîne carbonée ouverte non saturée, présent dans un grand nombre d'huiles végétales et animales et qui constitue un précurseur dans la synthèse du cholestérol (principalement dans le foie).
